Aluminum foil, in many flexible packaging applications, acts as the middle barrier layer (i.e., is positioned between two other layers) of a multi-layer structure. The typical laminated structure will include various materials, such as:

PET (polyester) as the outer layer (providing strength and printability),
Aluminum foil (as the barrier layer),
PE (polyethylene) as the inner layer (providing the ability to seal).

The three layers act together to form the complete package or container: PET provides the strength of the completed package, aluminum foil provides the barrier protection for the contents of the package, and PE provides the ability for the package to be sealed.

8011 Alloy of Aluminum Foil — This type of aluminum foil possesses good strength, durability to corrosion, and excellent efficacy in processing operations.

1235 Alloy of Aluminum Foil — This alloy has high purity and provides excellent flexibility and barrier performance.

8079 Alloy of Aluminum Foil — This type of foil is typically used when ultra-thin packaging films are required, as it has superior formability.

 
Typically, the thickness of flexible packaging aluminum foil is approximately 0.006 - 0.030 mm thick. The width of these flexible packaging aluminum foils may be determined by the production equipment used to produce packaging film types, with widths of flexible packaging aluminum foil ranging from 200 mm to 1600 mm.

Properties and Purpose of Different Temper Conditions of Aluminum Foil 

Temper Conditions define the flexibility and hardness of Aluminum Foil. Optional temper conditions for Flexible Packaging Foil include:

O Temper (Soft) — Fully annealed foil has good flexibility and is suitable for lamination, deep processing.

H18 Temper — A hard temper, foil type offers a higher degree of strength and stiffness and is normally used in packaging for specialized types of packaging structures.
