The aluminium alloy that is most commonly used is a 3003. It is classified as an aluminium-manganese alloy and has good mechanical properties. Sufficient corrosion resistance, formability and moderate strength make it a suitable choice when producing many types of semi-rigid containers, including take-out containers and food trays. When selecting a 3003 container foil temper, the most common tempers are O, H22 and H24. O temper is for very complex deep-drawn containers; H22 and H24 are for semi-rigid containers requiring a balance of formability and strength. A typical chemical composition of 3003 alloy would include approximately 99% aluminium (balance with) 1.0-1.5% manganese; ≤0.7% iron; 0.05-0.20% copper; these chemical compositions will provide the 3003 alloy with good mechanical stability during stamping and baking of this compound.

3004 aluminum alloy is an aluminum alloy composed of aluminum, manganese and magnesium, with a greater strength than 3003 aluminum alloy, good capability for deep-drawing, and a stable ability to resist heat. The most common application for 3004 aluminum alloy is in making heavy duty industrial trays and containers that must be heated to high temperatures to hold up to heavy weights such as industrial baking trays and containers for pet food. The chemical make-up of 3004 is magnesium (0.8 to 1.3%) and manganese (1.0 to 1.5%), which gives 3004 the greatest strength and ductility of the other two aluminum alloys noted.

8011 aluminum alloy is an aluminum alloy made up of aluminum, iron, and silicon, which is the lowest cost aluminum alloy used for making container foil. 8011 also has excellent formability, corrosion resistance, and is inexpensive. The most common tempers of 8011 container foil are O, H22 and H24. O temper is used when where a simple shape is needed, and H22 and H24 are used for creating semi-rigid containers that require a balance between cost and performance. The composition of 8011 consists of silicon (0.50-0.9%), iron (0.6-1.0%), and aluminum, which provides both excellent processability and therefore a competitive pricing advantage over other aluminum alloys.

The main benefits of using semi-rigid container foil include excellent formability and structural integrity. All semi-rigid container foil is easy to manufacture into many different shapes and sizes based on your needs. This can be done through stamping, deep drawing or other manufacturing processes that are required to produce anything from a shallow takeout container to a deep drawn airline meal container to custom shaped snack trays without cracking or deforming the container. The semi-rigid foil has a moderate amount of hardness and can thus retain their shape during transport and use to avoid food spillage and damage compared to other forms of aluminum foil. Compared to rigid aluminum containers, semi-rigid containers are lighter in weight and have greater flexibility; therefore, lower transportation costs and greater convenience can be found in using semi-rigid containers compared to rigid containers.

Second, it demonstrates high levels of food safety and barrier characteristics. Being a food-grade packaging material, semi-rigid container foil consists of high purity aluminum (minimum aluminum content of 99%) and has undergone stringent quality controls with no contaminants including heavy metals or organic solvents migrating into the product, therefore ensuring food safety. Furthermore, aluminum foil provides an absolute barrier and can effectively prevent light, oxygen and moisture from penetrating, thus prolonging the shelf life of foods, preserving freshness, and maintaining nutrition content (especially critical for frozen, ready-to-noodles, or takeout). Additionally, semi-rigid container foil has excellent heat tolerance withstanding high temperature reheating (250°C) and low temperature freezing (-40°C), enabling use in microwave, oven, and freezer; therefore, one product can serve multiple purposes, which greatly enhances ease of use.

The third point extends to the fact that both recyclable and environmentally-friendly, aluminum is aligned with the global green development trend. It can be fully recycled and using only 5% of initial energy consumption for aluminum production there is a decrease of energy consumption and environmental pollution. Aluminium foil (semi-rigid containers) will not contribute to the creation of "white pollution," unlike conventional foam or plastic food packaging, and can be recycled, allowing it to conform to multiple countries' environmental protection policies and receiving broad recognition from governments and enterprises. 

Finally, cost effectiveness and universality will also help to popularize semi-rigid container foils. The semi-rigid container foil uses relatively inexpensive alloys (such as 8011 and 3003), and its production process is well established, providing for lower production costs without diminishing product quality.
